Being a huge fan of the late band Your Best Friend I was pretty saddened when they broke up. They made pretty amazing music together. But, to my surprise some of the guys from Your Best Friend decided to start side projects. Depending your music fancy two of the boys Steven Coyler and John Bonham both started two separate groups. I think of which they both are indie/folk type rock. Steven's project is called Native America and you can listen to some of his music, as well as pick up an e.p. on his Facebook. (here) Along with Steven's music I am a huge fan of John's side project American Opera. If you are into acoustic folk rock check him out for sure! Some of his musical influences are Ben Folds & Manchester Orchestra.
I recently attended his first show in Saginaw at the Hamilton St. Pub and it was the first time I had ever listened to his music also. I went originally to see my other friends band play and stayed to check out John's set. I was astonished. It started out with just him and his guitar, but now he has a full band. My point of view, the band definitely makes the music along with John. Song after song he kept drawing me in, I even started singing along! Not like I'd ever heard these songs before, but it felt like I had been listening to them for years. Afterwards a close friend messaged him for some of his chords he plays and we've mastered playing some of the songs ourselves.
